Real Food VS Buzzword-Labeled-Food @ SymBowl
I have been trying to figure out a way of expressing my frustrations with what I view as a lack of morals and ethics in the food industry. As both a consumer and an industry person, I witness blatant misdirection and outright misrepresentation of many of the foods we eat and the places we buy them from.
It is a constant irritation to see how many people are fooled by the marketing tactics of the food business. We all need to start asking questions about where our food is coming from, how it is being treated, and how it is being sold to us. So when a customer asked a question about what was in the coconut cream we use, I admittedly got on my soapbox:
“Thanks for reaching out to us. We do indeed value our customers asking about our ingredients. As part of our core beliefs, we search out and source the best, cleanest ingredients we can. Interestingly enough, coconut cream is one ingredient we have struggled with for years now.
We have looked all over for a "real" product; the one we have always used is quite expensive and requires us to use a totally separate supplier for just that one product.
Recently, we thought we had discovered a new product through one of our larger vendors; it was even "organic." Much to our surprise and disappointment, this product was not clean at all!
It had three different stabilizers, multiple preservatives, and was made from rehydrated dried coconut.
Needless to say, we did not switch.
I made a very big deal about this to my staff because it was a great example of how misleading labels and our perceptions of quality can be.
So when you were told our coconut cream is just coconut, it really is. There is no other ingredient. It is made by blending the natural water and pulp of the coconut into a liquid. This is the type of product we choose to use. This is the integrity we seek when looking for ways to create our food.
We don't focus on buzzwords like "non-GMO," "organic," "natural," "cage-free," etc.
So often those marketing terms are abused and misconstrued to represent something the product isn't: real, honest food.
Please believe we were in no way trying to brush off your question. We really do value and work on trying to make sure we are as transparent in what we offer as possible.”
